Mental Health

According to the World Health Organisation, three in ten Nigerians suffer from some sort of mental illness. One in those three is unaware of the condition. The other two do not have access to treatment due to the stigma attached to it and the cost of treatment.

We hope these resources would help promote mental health awareness and break the stigma around it.

background

In Nigeria, mental health and therapy are rarely spoken about. When they come up in conversations, mental health is labelled as insanity and therapy, a waste of time. There is also the cluelessness about the different mental health problems there are and treatments for them.

Mental health however is an integral part of health and total wellbeing. It is a matter of the mind which controls how an individual contributes to the world around him and responds to the stresses of life. When an individual defects in this ability, he/she is said to have a mental health disorder.

In Nigeria, about 15,000 people commit suicide yearly with the country ranking 15th in the world's frequency suicide rate. This proves that this is a crisis that must be urgently attended to.

Some mental disorders include but are not limited to;

  • Addiction & Substance Abuse
  • Attention deficit /Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
